Half way through construction, he changed the angle from 54 degrees to 43 degrees. It was first believed this was to avoid having the casing collapse like at Meidum, but now it is thought the weight of the material was causing cracks in the chambers. The reduced angle reduced the amount of material piling up on top. There are entrances to the North and to the West for the two corbelled chambers.
To the South, there is a small pyramid for Sneferu's Wife Queen Hetepheres.
All in all there are more questions than answers for this unusual pyramid, especially as Sneferu then built his new Red Pyramid just north of here. |
