The church, even though it has been there 160 years is not on the OS map, and so having been aware of the church and carvings' existence, I have never been able to find them! Better luck this week.
As noted, the church is Victorian, and is chock full of carvings. All are the work of a Revd Waldegrave Brewster, between 1872 and 1890. Green men, grotesques, the story of the 'fairy cow' from the stone circle, and even all the signs of the zodiac are carved within the church's fabric.
Here the cow is seen, people queueing to milk her, then comes along a witch, and milks her dry. She is then turned to stone by magic, and set inside the circle. Mitchell's Fold, like its nearby circle, the Hoarstones either had, or has (and is sunken) a central stone.
A wondrous church, albeit relatively young. Lovely craftsmanship, and a fascinating blend of traditions. |
