Any ideas on what this is?

It's looks recent. There's another carving on the nearby Ilkley Moor that seems to have the same 'signature style', it's a pic of a hill with a representation of the sun. Or it was, but the last time I looked for it (a few weeks back) it seems to have been erased by someone.

Oh yeah, forgot to say; there's a bloke in Ilkley who's quite well known for doing 'modern' rock-art. He's p1ssed a few folks off with it, carving them next to the 'Hangingstones' rock art, and on the Idol Rock.

And it looks like one of his...

Well whatever it is - it isn't prehistoric so I don't know what it's doing on the Megalithic Portal. File under modern graffiti?

I never suggested that it was prehistoric. My query is whether it is from the last few decades or from the last few centuries, and if the latter is the case, whether it is Masonic, or something along that line. I don't mind it being removed from MP, Thorgrim, but in that case I'd be grateful for some guideline as to what things are included. A lot of rock outcrops seem to be included for no reason other than being atmospheric.

Not a problem and we are quite happy tp display it as an example of recent vandalism. For guidelines see here

Rombald, the lighter edges around the grooves would suggest it’s been carved in the last few years, rather than decades. The cup marked rock you’re looking for is on the east facing west portion of the crags (according to Prehistoric Rock Carvings of the West Riding) if you’ve a GPS, its grid ref is SE2324252260.

Is a modern carving, as long as it does not deface an ancient carving, or cut large pieces out of a rock, necessarily vandalism?

Whoever did do these carvings, they are quite well done and must have taken some effort to carve. Looks a bit like a face actually, but probably radiating suns. Interesting though. Should stay on the Portal I think.

We have no way of knowing whether ancient rock art was of any more than aesthetic value, so maybe in 3000 years or so these will be stimulating similar discussions?
Be handy if he signed them though!
