Succeeded the emperor Arcadius and governed from Constantinople. His militarily trained elder sister Pulcheria was his Regent. Theodosius had a relatively peaceful start and successfully managed relations with the Parthians. Unfortunately the Huns, under Atila, forced the Eastern Empire to pay a heavy tribute which brought constantinople nearly to its knees. Theodosius II greatest claim to fame was his legal reforms which had long term impact. The style of the early Middle Ages is already apparant.
Statue in Louvre, Paris. |

unpleasant smell under his nose. |
