One of the remaining stones.Smelting Hill is an embanked stone circle with only two stones remaining to the south-east of the site. One of the stones stands approximately 0.75m in height while the other is lying flat. The two are placed approximately 3.5m apart. The embankment has disappeared in the eastern half of the circle, but can still be faintly traced to the west. This bank would originally have been about 1.5m to 2m wide and circa 11m in diameter. This site at Smelting Hill is often confused with another possible circle, now lost, known as Abney Moor (SK20?80?). |
