After his mother Agrippina probably murdered Claudius, Nero succeeded him and at first reigned sensibly while still under the tutelage of Seneca. The regime became more and more decadend until he was overthrown and forced to commit suicide. 6 generals, including Galba, Otho and Vitellius, who actual reigned for part of a year each, attempted to gain power until Vespasian stabilised the empire at the end of 69, thereby establishing the Flavian dynasty.
The statue is made out of the extremely valuable Porphiri, but was damaged and thrown into some rubble in a Roman palace upon the overthrow of the unpopular princeps. |
