The road linked Godmanchester to Colchester and may have extended to Chester (Deva). Because it was thought to go on to Chester it was named the Via Devana in the 18th century.
Much more interesting is the fact that the Roman road was built over a prehistoric British track which proves the lie that British roads were wandering lanes before the Romans arrived and straightened them all out! Very close to where this photograph was taken, the road passes a Neolithic long barrow, a Bronze Age round barrow (Copley Hill)and an Iron Age hillfort (Wandlebury) The British track linked these sites long before the Roman invasion. |
