Contact them for permission to reproduce it. | | | Description | SO 055 628 is Castell Collen Roman Fort, not far from Llandrindod Wells. Permission to visit should be sought from house at the end of the track. Initially turf & timber in the AD 70s, the 5 acre fort was then stone clad in the middle of the 2nd century. It could have housed about 1000 infantry, or 500 cavalry.
I believe this photo looks across the centre of the fort, past the Principia.
If you visit in high summer be prepared for neck high thistles! Looking around was quite difficult, and interpretation not that easy.
The area has the highest density of Roman practice camps in the Roman Empire - some 18 of them nearby. 8 of them are reputed to be traceable on the common in Llandrindod! |
