It's amazing how stones sneak in when you plan a day without them. For my daughter's birthday, we were going to the excellent Quackers Childrens' Play Centre (see www.quackersnow.com ) only a few minutes from the campsite, which we did.
On one occasion I returned to the car for some water, and there was a large boulder looking at me, as it were, from an adjoining field. I obtained permission from the venue, which was fine, subject to the presence of livestock.
The stone is quite sizeable, set in from the field boundary, rounded and smoothed in places. It has the appearance of having been snapped off a larger piece of stone.
I suspect a glacial erratic, but Coflein does not list the stone (which often does for glacial erratics), so this pends confirmation.
Interestingly, the widest axis of the stone does align exactly east-west. |
