Description Long Stone, SZ404839
I believe to be the only Standing Stone on the Isle.
Through the village of Mortistone there is a sign post that takes you onto private land , but no guided signs to take you up to the stone.
A steady climb of 30 min's or so amid heathers and teasles (of which I had to cut myself a bunchful to bring home) and overlooking lovely views of Brighstone Down.
The Stone itself standing aprox-13-14 ft. tall, another ground Stone of 7-8ft. lays beside.
With a rich iron content the Long Stone is not of grand appearence -but never-the-less still a lonely and lovely sight to behold.

At Last! I was wondering when you were going to post a picture of The Longstone. It is an interesting climb through a hollow path, if you park by the National Trust cabin, or you can park and come up from Strawberry Lane. One time I visited I found another stone, to the west, of same colour in a small field nearby which was no taller than 3ft. It was difficult to work out it's relation to the Longstone with it's uneven terrain, gorse, trees and hedges.
