This photo of one of my favourite portal tombs was taken just after nightfall at around 7pm on the 13th February this year. The lightsource is a handheld torch, no other trickery! F5.6, 6 seconds. |

(2005-07-19) | Very nice indeed! I don't consider painting with the light of a torch to be trickery. "Photo" means light and "graph" means to draw so photography is drawing or painting with light - which you have done admirably. Bet you had to run around a bit during those 6 seconds! | Nasher

(2005-07-20) | There's no doubt that this is a stunning photo, but the fairly strong false light takes away some of the atmosphere. If you'd had a fire burning, for instance, (guess that wouldn't have gone down well with the authorities!) the flickering flames' more natural light enhancement could have been more sympathetic to the old stones? Just my thoughts, for what they're worth! I'm no expert. | KenWilliams
(2005-07-24) | Thanks for the nice comments, this kind of lighting is trickier than it first seems. The trick seems to be constant movement of the beam from the torch, any length of time on one spot will burn out details and if you miss spots it comes out streaky. It took four or five shots to get a good result. Its something I've been trying to perfect for the past few months at various sites, using flash and torch light in some cases together ( http://cianmcliam.smugmug.com/gallery/433962/1/17432886 ). I think it gives another dimension to the sites and makes you look at them with 'new eyes'.
Natural flame lighting would look more natural but is also illegal so close to protected sites and irresponsible! | STEVE the PUNK

(2005-12-30) | why nit pick? Why take away the focus from an obviously stunning photograph by constantly nagging at insignificant details, what is wrong with just admiring its outstanding beauty? | Octopus
(2005-12-31) | I think this is a really great shot. The lighting and contrast really give compliments to the structure. May possibly have had go at the fence in photoshop as suggested above but then again leaving it in gives some scale and perspective,
so, in anycase, BRILLIANT!
