The lintel (stone 122) resting on Stones 21 and 22 far left, seems to have been recently repaired here. I'm sure this was the one whose underside I took a shot of at a Summer Solstice (05?).

I remember walking about the Stones back in 1956 as an impressed boy of twelve, we just parked on the grass and there we were,no probs in those days.

During Atkinson's major Restoration in 1958 Lintel 122 was repaired and re-hung. It's now held together by several heavy-gauge steel rods, as it broke when it fell in 1900. Also interesting in this photo are the three faces of the SouthWest Trilithon's 3 components. Devoid of lichens as they had lain on the ground for 160 years, the entire structure had come shivering down en mass in an intense winter gale on the night of 3 January 1797. It's said that people were woken from their beds 20 miles away from the crash!
The extensive photographs of the excavations during the restoration are fascinating! One can truly get a feel for the age of this thing and the work required to build it by seeing the meticulous sockets painstakingly carved into the underlying chalk-bed.
Thankfully we have those pictures, as everything around the re-set Stones is filled with concrete now ...
