In this region to the north of the town of Angoulême are many many megalithic remains. I went there expecting about half a dozen sites to look for, but spent the entire day there, and there was still much much more to see. Apart from the few sites on maps, there are dolmens and unexplored tumuli on hilltops everywhere.

While parking to go for a walk here, a van pulled up beside me and an old chap got out and asked what I was doing, they dont get many visitors round here. When I said I was going to look for the dolmens, he got all excited, and he told me there were lots to see. He went back to his van and got out a folder full of pictures. Turns out he was an archaologist, and has a massive collection of stuff from the area, and was pleased that someone else was out looking. When I told him I was finding as many places as possible in France, he was well impressed. His collection had things from thousands of flint tools, some bronze tools and arrowheads, through roman coins and pottery, right up to a Napoleonic soldiers button, much of which he had just picked up from the fields here.

He pointed out to me that there was so much here, but hardly anyone knew anything of it, or indeed was interested in this forgotten little backwater. From where we were stood, he said you could see more than a dozen burial mounds, several of which are huge.

I ended up visiting 15 sites that day, many of which were completely unknown. It gave great pleasure, and the feelings of almost genuine exploration and discovery were tremendous. It certainly is an area for more investigation.
