Description 'Woodhenge’, Cahokia, Illinois. The ancient city of Cahokia is famous mainly for its Mounds which are thought to have been constructed between 700-1400AD, but within the complex the remains of a timber circle with a diameter of 410ft was also found. In recent years the circle has been reconstructed with 40 posts been set in place. In this picture you can see a view from the central post. For more information about Cahokia, please visit the site page.

I note what looks like a flat-topped hill on the far horizon of this photo. Isn't that the main "pyramid" of the Cahokia complex which lies to the east of the "Woodhenge" site? The main mound at Cahokia is roughly pyramidal in shape with a level top which is thought to have had wooden buildings at the top level. The base of the stucture is larger than the base of the Great pyramid of Giza. The structure was thought to have been built entirely of earth, but several years back, internal stone and gravel were found that indicates that some amount of stone work was used to stablize the structure during building. I will try to find the source for that finding. The Cahokia site is truely impressive. It is run by the State of Illinois, and has a very interesting visitors center on site with maps, guides, a small museum and an audio visual presentation.
