Tucked away in a side alley often reeking of urine just off Northgate St, with no sign posting for it, are the remains of the Strongroom. Money and the legionary standards were stored here, in the heart of the fortress - The Principia.
Considerable effort has been made into making sure these ruins remain visible and able to be interpreted, yet I have shown this to visitors who have been many times to Chester, and this was a revelation for them.
The remains are about 2 metres under current ground level, with a glass frontage, and interpretive boards. |
