Not wishing to trample the crops or to get my trousers soaked, my only approach was to follow the ruts left by tractor wheels. I noticed that the field is for sale! Most of the fields around have been built over and are now industrial sites. How safe is this place now - with threatened Thornborough just a few miles away? Click on the orange icon from the site page and take a look at the line up of the three Thornborough henges with the Devil's Arrows. Three other henges are very nearly on the same line - Cana, Nunwick and Hutton Moor. This must have been an incredibly important ritual landscape, but it is sadly neglected now - agriculture, massive quarries and a hotch potch of industial warehouses. The three henges mentioned above haven't been photographed for the Portal, so perhaps they are ploughed out. If these sites were in Wiltshire, they would be star attractions with National Trust tea shop and all! Does English Heritage only care about sites in the south? |
