Description Too good to be true! The Cerne Abbas Giant was long thought to be a prehistoric hill figure showing a powerful fertility god. Other theories favoured a Roman depiction of Hercules wielding his club. Recent dating of the disturbed soil indicates that it is much more recent. It is now thought to be a caricature of Oliver Cromwell and mocks his self agrandisement as the great all powerful leader. Probably cut on the instructions of the local Catholic landowner at the restoration of the Monarchy.

I wonder what all the infertile couples (who've gone, in desperation, to frolic on the 'honourable member') would think of that new finding, and how many little 'Olivers' were subsequently produced...??

I have read somewhere that the giant once had a navel, and that a recutting at some stage incorporated it as an extension to a more modestly sized phallus: I have no idea what the motivation for this might have been. Does the giant have any rivals?

Circumstantial evidence?! ;-p He does seem to be wielding a decent-sized piece of wood. I always think the expression is one of surprise! Like he's just discovered what it does... Incidentally, several years ago Geo-physical surveys uncovered evidence that there was originally a can of Carling Black Label lager in his left hand.
