Situated in an area where coal was once extensively mined this has been confirmed by the local archeology unit to be the remains of a bell pit. Illustrated also: Bottom Left - A group of bell pits close by on Great Hill - just waiting to be described as a barrow cemetery!! Bottom Right - An eroded section of Moortop ‘Barrow’ showing mining waste. |
| Posted Comments: David (2006-02-27) | Sadly one of the characteristics of bell pits is that they don't leave much spoil. Spoil heaps very rarely have a round cross-section, as this heap clearly does. One of the common characteristics of bowl barrows is a concave summit - just like this one has. Erroneously describing this barrow as spoil heap - without any evidence for a coal mine - is deeply offensive and against the spirit of enthusiastic research. |
