Spanish Point/Ospraie Near Sarasota, Florida.
N27.20387 W82.49942
The Spanish Point Penninsula was inhabited between 2000 BCE and 1000 CE by the so called Archaic Culture.
During this time, the natives threw out remains of shells and fish bones, which gradualy caused the ground over which they lived to rise by about 5 meters. The natives themselves lived in small huts, post holes of which have been found.
American Homesteaders of the 19th Century built houses on the high ground, as it afforded protection against tides etc. When in the mid 1980's a landowner tried to build a garage, the Midden was recognized for what it is and proper Archeological excavations were carried out between 1991 and 1992. Only part of the site was excavated due to the sheer volume, and a structure/museum was built over the rest to protect it. Exhibits are on display.
