Description La Cité de Carcassonne seen here across the river Aude from the northwest.
Ancient citadel which goes back as far as time. Although the main remains of this fantastic fairy story city are now mediaeval much of the walls can be seen to date back to Visigoth and Roman times. This is of course, all built upon a citadel which was here long before any of them came here.
Shame the picture was taken on a dull day, which I remember as being freezing cold.

this picture shows the hilltop fortifications clearly commanding this important river crossing.

And I've got one just like it of Chepstow also showing how it commands the river crossing... and of 19th century Tilbury commanding the Thames.. and lots and lots more if we really are going medieval. How about some Napoleonic Martello towers and a few WW II pill boxes?

Maybe given enough time with photoshop I could sort it out, but I am not that skilled yet. So just use some imagination, and replace those big stone walls with smaller stone walls with wooden pallisades on top. And the big stone bridge replaced by some smaller wooden one. And the stone houses removed. It hasnt changed that mush in 2000 years.

I can't see much prehistory here - can you move this and similar to it the History gallery.

Angie - in your dreams! Point is that we can accept high quality photos of medieval castles etc and display them in our History Gallery - that's what its for. We have to try to restrict the bulk of the Megalithic Portal's content to prehistoric sites - the exceptions being Pictish carvings, crosses and well heads (Picts and crosses will eventually be removed and relocated in a planned Dark Ages Portal . Wells can be prehistoric even if the buildings are modern) See FAQs for guidance.
