(2005-01-20) | Thorgrim, these photos by 'ammanamba' have all been contributed by the Dutch Ambassador to Jordan, see below. Pages are under construction and this is all the information we have at the moment. We hope more will follow.
Dear Sir,
On behalf of prof. Zeidan Khafafi I would like to answer you on your
question concerning material on megalithic structures in Jordan. I presented
a powerpoint presentation at the Rhodes confrence on the subject and would
be happy to send this to you for publication on the site. We are still
finalising our contribution to the proceedings of the conference which will
appear next year, by the way.
I have build up an extensive collection of photos of dolmens and menhirs in
Jordan (which boast one of the densest populations of these structures) - as
well as related phenomena such as cupholes and alignments. In all modesty I
don't think anyone has surveyed more of these than myself. If you want I
would be happy to forward a number of these too, please let me know under
what conditions and how many you want.
Finally, I am planning the publication of a book on megalithic structures in
Jordan (mainly for public awareness raising reasons, as they are
disappearing at an alarming rate) with Zeidan and others, as well as a
conference on megalithism in the Levant next year.

(2006-01-20) | This is indeed a dolmen, or more correctly, a lithic structure with a burial function. The photo is one of the dolmen field at al Mureigat, a most impressive and important dolmen field in Jordan, which is unfortunately threatened by a stone quarry (but I think that we managed to stop them by 1/1/06). the only scientific research which has been done on this particular field is by Dr Sephen H. Savage (see Annual of the Department of Antiquities in Joran, ADAJ, 2001). |
