Photo taken from the central "temple", looking out across the ritual site.
The platform below the temple contained a lot of statue_menhirs, leading across to a second lower temple. The land then falls steeply to a stream and then slopes up to a semi-circle of five unbroken menhirs.
A truely magical site. We spend hours there. It would have been fantastic to have been able to camp there and watch the sunset! |

I did wonder about the number of statue-menhirs, when you said, in the caption to the original picture, that: 'at the central temple, the site of six of these, you look down on a place with five of them'. SO - at the place of five, do you look at a place with four?! and so on..... No doubt they've been lost over the years, but if these were the original quantities, maybe somewhere in the valley is the site with just the one, and this leads across to a site with two, and then three, and so on, till the pilgrimage ends at the top of the central temple hill? | nicoladidsbury
(2005-01-11) | The menhirs are litterally all over the ritual site, and some have been moved to the museum. Six menhirs guard the enterance to the central monument/temple. If I remember correctly there are five down on the plain. Several broken ones lie between the central monument and the west monument below. |
