| Posted Comments: AngieLake (2005-01-09) | The blocked original entrance at the SE is below the thick bushes on the left of this photo. A heavy Dartmoor mist had come down during the morning, obscuring the views of Yar Tor, which rises quite steeply in the background, with Corndon Tor out of sight to the left. | thecaptain (2005-01-09) | Are thos stones stickin oput of the top, and do they make up any sort of internal structural type arrangement ? | AngieLake (2005-01-10) | Hi Martyn! Yes, they were stones, but didn't seem to be poking out from below at the time. If you read the site information I entered, you will see what Tony and I dowsed there. I will ask him if he knows any more about this. As I said, I'm sure it's private land, so we wouldn't necessarily be able to go back to check this out. | AngieLake (2005-01-10) | There was a large, light-coloured stone under the bushes by the SE entrance. You can just see it at the end of the barrow. | thecaptain (2005-01-10) | yes, I did read your posting, which was why I was wondering, cos these stones seemed too far from what you said was the entrance. Its possible they were just stones piled up to make the barrow, rather than the remains of the internal structure. | AngieLake (2005-01-11) | Yes, they are probably rubble used to build up the mound which extends quite a lot further than the right of the photo. The chamber would have only been about one-third of the way along this barrow from the left. | AngieLake (2005-01-19) | This is not private land after all, according to Tony. I checked with him this morning. Roads are very narrow there, and from memory, if you are driving down into the valley from the south, this site is up a stony single-track path rising on the right, as it forks off the road that goes through Sherwell, behind (to the east of) Rogues Roost, and leading to the gate of a house called Little Roost. The chambered long barrow is on the left of this track. Interestingly, on the ordnance survey map, a 'spring' is marked around there. We did drive up to park near the barrow because it was arranged, but perhaps that would not make you popular with the owners of nearby houses! Watch out for people on horses, as there is a riding stable in the hamlet. |
