| Posted Comments: Thorgrim (2004-12-21) | Can we be certain that this not natural weathering? Cup and ring marks are usually found in northern Britain, Ireland and in Europe. Do we know of other genuine marks in Devon? | simonsworn (2004-12-21) | to reply to Thorgrim (21-12-4), the marks on this stone are definatly not from non-anthroprogenic weathering, there are in fact c. 14 cup marks, of which four are particularly clear, they are all of similar dimensions, the rock is granite, not know for weathering in this particular form. there are at least two other possible rocks on Dartmoor displaying similar markings. | Thorgrim (2004-12-21) | OK thanks Simon. I was cautious as I have seen lots of similar granite stones in Scilly and they are all natural. Cheers! | thecaptain (2006-08-08) | Just found reference to this stone in my Butler vol.2, in which it states that it has been identified as a prehistoric cup marked boulder, one of only three known in the Dartmoor region. |
