During the first half of the 12th century a Priory was built at Holystone as a home for some Augustinian Canonesses. Since then the well has been known as Lady's Well after these religious ladies who cared for the well right up to the Dissolution of the Monasteries. They are said to have added the cross that reflects so splendidly in the water.

Water testing has shown that the closest match to this great water is found in Bergen Norway, some 4-500 miles north East.
