Contact them for permission to reproduce it. |  | | Description | Pentre Ifan (PEM 5), one of the most impressive chambered tombs in Wales and standing at around 145m AOD, consists of a tilted capstone, dipping towards the Nevern valley to the north, perched upon three tall uprights. The resulting chamber is 3m long, 2m wide and 3m high. It was originally cut about 40cms into the ground surface and lined with dry stone walling, but has recently been infilled. The blocking stone (doorway) in the forecourt area was packed with small stones around the base. On the outer face of the blocking stone, a single cupmark and ring have been identified (Lynch 1974, 120). Later Morris (1989, 87) noted the cupmark as a spiral. The monument is located on the eastern side of Mynydd Carningli and has extensive views of the lower Nevern Valley and the sea. It is also intervisible with Carreg Coetan (PEM 3) and Llech-y-Tribedd (PEM 1), which lie on the western side of the Nevern Valley. - Text adapted from the forthcoming book: The Architecture of Death: Neolithic Chambered Monuments of Wales by George Nash.
