Description The sheela-na-gig at Kilpeck Church. The church guidebook says dictionaries of slang give gig, gigg or geig as a "woman's privities [sic]" and that megalithic stones may lie beneath it.

For an in-depth detailed study of the meaning and origins of the somewhat prosaic name see Sheela-na-Gig

Kilpeck is NOT in Ireland!!! It is in Herefordshire!! The church is that of St Mary and St David and the sheela is high up at the roof line. It dates to the 12th century. See also other photographs of weird carvings at Kilpeck in the Dark Age Gallery under construction.

Is that some Norman zigzag design above the Sheela?

ST The church was built (according to the guidebook) by 1143 & apparently remains virtually unchanged,so yes it could be Norman.Incidently, the dedication to St D came at a time when he was first written about.Previously he was a little-known St & unlike Illtud etc has no archaeological evidence for his existance.Interestingly this was a time when the Welsh church had just submitted to the Roman church.

It looks as if it was carved yesterday! The zigzag looks new too.

Sile na gigs are often found on buildings much newer than the sile, they have often been incorporated in buildings after being recovered from ruins of others. There are several carvings missing from Kilpeck unfortunately.
