The church has architectural features described as transitional Norman and so as a Christian site the sacred area, and graveyard in particular, must date back to the 11th century. However, it is almost certain that this church was built on the site of the shrine to St. Levan, a 6th Century saint. And to muddy the waters even more, the parish of St. Levan is known to have been inhabited as far back as 2500 BCE.
