Contact them for permission to reproduce it. | | | Description | Now just a mound behind the farm, just next to the footpath that goes past the farm, Pinkwell long barrow is now barely visible. It was excavated by Akerman in 1856. The eastern side had a surround of dry stone walling, and towards the centre stones of a larger size. The southern edge of the barrow had been disturbed twenty years earlier for its stone. Three skeletons had been found then. Akerman found some sixteenth or seventeeth century pottery and concluded that the barrow had been dug into at that period. He found no bones. In 1920 it was under the plough and O.G.S. Crawford reported that it had spread and was now 180 feet long. Easy access by footpath. |
