First published in 1967 by Thames and Hudson, the revised edition is still in print and contains 241 illustrations ofwhich 54 are in colour. Illustrated here is the faience statuette of the Snake Goddess c.1600 BC - is this Ariadne? Superbly crafted is this serpentine rhyton (wine pourer) of a bull's head. The horns are of gilded wood and the eyes are of rock crystal. This is a truly superb naturalistic study and when excavated, the finders must have thought they had uncovered the Minotaur himself! |
