(2004-02-02) | Walked up to this one frosty morning in the 1980s, a traveler from across the pond. The whole landscape was silvered with frost and glowing with early morning rays of sunlight. I was alone except for the sheep in the next field and a white horse who gazed at me, the steam rising from his back. Time seemed to stand still as I approached. I crawled on hands and knees along the passage and lay on my back in the chamber. Then I sat on the capstone in the stillness, feeling the rough lichened stone beneath my hands. My ancestors came from England. I felt the same sense of quiet Belonging that I occasionally feel under old beech and oak trees or beside woodland springs. I will always remember coming here.
