(2004-10-22) | Forgot to mention it. The other entrance has steps and passageways which spoil the phtoopportunity, but from there you can look into the passageways, which are however of limits to tourists due to the subsidence of the cairn. | thecaptain

(2004-10-23) | When I was there in 2001 I think the guide told us it was put there to help protect the beautifully-carved kerb stones from the weather. They'd had to create a kind of support shelf to the overhanging grass/turf. | AngieLake
(2004-10-23) | The white quartz 'rubble' wasn't around the mound then, (2001) nor was the standing stone in place. We didn't have access to the timber circle either, but I filmed it from the postition of our 'lecture', below. It must be good to be able to see along the passage now, even if you aren't allowed in. That was the most disappointing part of my earlier visit! | thecaptain
(2004-10-23) | I know almost nothing of this site, its quite possible thats the case. I did visit Newgrange a few years back, and that has been totally rebuilt in a fairly arbitrary manner. Its also been turned into a sort of Disney Theme Park type of place, presumably to suit visitors who just want a quick tour and a story, not a proper look round an ancient site. | AngieLake

(2004-10-27) | When I get back to London, I will post pictures of the better individual carved curbstones. Yes the Cement shelf protects the stones from erosion. |
