5th / 6th century memorial stone, used as lintel.
COFLEIN records that "St Baglan’s is home to a later 5th or early 6th century inscribed stone (‘FILI LOVERNII / ANATEMORI’) which has been re-used as the rear lintel of the south doorway (Nash-Williams 1950, 88; RCAHMW 1960, 200).
This photo was taken during one of the occasional (and precious!) weekends when local volunteers open the church for visitors. Happily, one of the volunteers is a very knowledgeable Portal contributor, so I knew about the opening in advance from his posts on the Portal so was able to gear our travels to get there.
A very special bit of coincidence.. |
| Posted Comments: Sunny100 (2012-04-19) | Thank you Pab. Now I know what the stone looks like ! | pab (2012-04-21) | No problem Sunny...it is a lovely little church - I hope you get the chance to visit soon. The stone wasn't quite what or where I expected, even though I had read it was being used as a lintel! |
