| Posted Comments: cosa (2003-05-25) | near to this site is maumbry rings....I have never in my life felt so terrified when I walked into the circle, does anyone have any info on this, It really does have a strange atmosphere. | den browne (2003-06-11) | We went to Maiden Castle yeterday (10.6.03) - I've reaad abt it/see loads of pix but nothing prepared me for the utterly massive scale of the place. Its really worth taking the trouble to explore the outer rings (& using the steps is cheating!) & the serene vibe of the top level iswill reward yr efforts. Pity abt the intrusive view on the horizon of a certain prince's toytown project (a.k.a Poundbury). Could say much more... If you get the chance, go to Eggardon as well - just as impressive but with a really different vibe: immersed in low cloud/sea-fret when we went, p[retty intense & totally separate from down below.
Went to Hod last yr - I'm getting blown away by the number & mega-scale of the Dorset "hillforts" - but think more & more that this is a Victorian misnomer/category hang-up, & that military use was very small consideration at the time. Recommend going midweek if you can - both places practically deserted - & respect the ancestors!
den b | max langdown (2003-09-16) | Local Legend has maumbury rings as site of Romano British slaughter, many soundings of crashing swords/shields over years and sights of flashing breast plates etc. Most recently camping overseas students fled in terror when awakened in early hours by horrendous shouting flashing crashing battle noises....not suprised you were spooked cosa! | Max Langdown (2004-08-09) | Further information on Maumbury Rings. It was a place of public execution until, in historical terms, not so long ago.
Famously an alledged witch/ murderess, who pled her innocence to the last, was strangled there in front of a baying mob. There are,not suprisingly, some heavy vibes about the place. maxtrax23@msn.com |
