This kind of incorporation may seem distasteful at first sight, but it often is the reason that earthworks have been preserved at all, as in the case of the famous Octagon Mound at the Newark, Ohio Earthworks, which remained intact largely because it has been incorporated into a golf course. (In that case, however, preservationists eventually had to fight for it to remain unharmed when the golf course wanted to expand.)
It is likely that these mounds remain only because they are part of the cemetery, probably a use in harmony with at least one of their original purposes. |
