Beautiful picture. How did you manage to get the birds so sharp in that light?

Stunning image, a composite? Otherwise I'm bringing all my gear back to the camera shop and telling them 'I'll have what he's got!' Beautiful either way.

I assumed this was a painting--something about the shafts of light.

There's lots of stunning pics in the competition - but this one captures a moment perfectly.

As I have been to Castlerigg, this shot says it all....
This certainly looks surreal, and I can see you have taken some time with it as well.... Pure Magic.

I was going to wait until voting had finished before responding to comments but if you insist Andy.

The shot was taken on 21st january 2007 1/60th of a second at f11 effective Iso 100 34mm focal length on a full frame DSLR.

The sky has been darkened with neutral density graduation to retain the detail in a scene with very high dynamic range. This does make the light look a little murkier than the exposure would indicate.

The rooks are a constant, noisy presence at the Carles, nesting in trees just to the left of frame.

Scrap that idea, its not a new camera I need, its a spare sun!

Thank you all for your kind comments and votes.

The Carles are my favourite stone circle and a place I visit every time I am in the area and after many photographs taken here, this shot finally captured the atmosphere of the place for me.

I'm glad it seems to do the same for you too.

Lovely, but it just doesn't work for me. Even if they're real, the rooks and especially the light through the clouds look false. I've had that happen when I take a picture sometimes, real things coming out looking out of place or odd. Nice circle, though. Would love to go there!

Photos are of the moment, all moments are different and don't repeat. So every photo is unique.

Wayland, I loved this shot. Some may say you got lucky but I also know that there is skill in knowing the moment to click! My last visit to Castlerigg was tough as my camera did not record any shots inside the circle - but I have shots from outside before and after. Very spooky, and taught me about the power of place. I will look out for you at Megalithamania. Well done. Maia of Shaldon, Devon.

Regretably I won't be able to make it to Megalithamania. I've passed my prize onto PhilipT for his excellent picture of this circle.

I assume from the stunning quality of this photo (& your expensive kit) that you're a professional photog. Have you had this published anywhere? If so, where?
