| Posted Comments: KalaRyder (2007-03-25) | Outstanding colours. I did not manage to visit Callanish III, unfortunately, so this is quite a treat. | nicoladidsbury (2007-03-27) | Beautiful sky, but the colours in the stone are truely spectacular. Great photo. | swhitehead (2007-03-28) | Thanks for your comments - the stone on the right is unusual for Calanais as it can only be found at a few exposed seams on the island, It is a pink form of Lewisian gneiss. The builders of this circle went to a great deal of effort to bring this stone here, it possibly came from Dal Beg some 8 miles north of Calanais. The inner group of stones at Calanais III consists of four stones, the three grouped together are beleived by some to represent the three stages of womanhood, the fourth being a phallic representation. This stone on the right of the photograph is the middle female stone and why some believe the unique colour to represent fertility. The late evening some has emphasised the colour nicely but you can see the difference in the stone of the outer circle behind. | nicoladidsbury (2007-03-28) | That really interesting - thanks for the explanation, I'm even more determined to get there to visit now. |
