Surya shrine: dedicated to the Sun in the inner courtyard. This is one of the oldest structural shrines in South India. The main shrine for Shiva as Nageshvara is thought to have been build in 885 C.E. http://asianart.com/articles/deekshithar/index.html. This is a parivara devata shrine, a subsidiary shrine thought to have been contemporaneous.
