(2011-10-27) | Thank you so much Guile. Externsteine is a somewhat difficult site (as many other prehistoric sites in Germany it was abused by the Nazis to support their weird racial-theories and these made proper research almost impossible for many years). Furthermore my knowledge regarding sites' archaeology currently still is very limited. There is evidence the 'Externsteine' rock formation attracted humans already in the neolithic age. And there are rumours it was some kind of sanctuary. And of course it was christianised later. These statue is beside one entrance to a man-made cave system possibly being constructed in the 8th century (there were carbon-datings of burn-marks). On a nearby rock face there is a large relief from romanesque age. I am not sure whether the statue in this photo predates the mentioned romanesque relief or is of same age, but more weathered. | guile
