guessing here but was this an attempt to christianise this monument?

Yes, it was an attempt to christianise the place- didn't succeed fully

It shows Christ stood on a bent over IRMINSUL-which is the Saxon world pillar or tree.This pillar may of stood at this site up until Charlemagne's destrution of the Heathen temples ,hence the picture above(have You noticed the legs have been removed on the Christ)
