A 17th century timber framed mansion and warehouse joined together, and now
a museum within the heart of Shrewsbury.
It boasts a small but captivating prehistory collection dating back to
12,000 BC; microliths, neolithic axe heads from Graig Lwyd (North Wales),
Corndon Hill (Shropshire, near Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle) and Langdale
Pike (Cumbria); Bronze Age metalwork and 'primitive log boats' also feature.
The museum also has an astonishingly large collection of artefacts from
nearby Wroxeter / Viroconium, which was one of the largest Roman /
Romano-British cities in the country, in its time.
On my visit, I was given the opportunity to handle an intact mortarium, as
well as real samian ware, and tessarae.
For the children, there is also dressing up in prehistoric style garb, and
for all the family, the opportunity to dress in a range of mediaeval styles.
I really felt this was a museum trying to engage and inspire its visitors;
we spent a happy, interested 2 hours here.
