The water level could also be adjusted, enabling the causeways linking the camps (largest pictured to the rear here) to be flooded, thus any retreat on foot to safer ground is well guarded for those who knew where to walk.
The marsh is still in evidence here, and for a sense of scale, look to the people on the top of the rampart beneath the main camp's summit. This is a very impressive, and very unusual site.
This was at a gathering of the Berth Archaeological Group on Saturday 25th March, when we had the enormous pleasure of a guided talk by Ernie Jenks who carried out the dig here in 1962/3.
The Berth lies well out of bounds on private land with several owners, and can only be accessed with permission. |
