(2012-03-26) | Colt-Hoare was probably the best and most accurate Stonehenge draftsman since Ignio Jones.
All the Stones are carefully rendered, proportional, and in their proper positions for the time. We see the perilously leaning Stone 56 of the Great Trilithon, prevented from falling by deep-seated, grooved bluestone 68. The SouthWest Trilithon lays in sad ruin following its thunderous collapse only 15 years before. Consequently weakened by the fall we see a twisted Stone 22, its lintel tipping — a harbinger of its own collapse about 88 years later. Stumpy Stone 11 is portrayed as not much different-looking than today, and we even see the King's Barrows off in the distance.
Oddly however, we see a tiny, disproportionate figure sitting on lintel 156, lost among the Stones, no doubt a nod to the then-popular trend of making the Sarsens even more impressive than they are — difficult to imagine if one actually stands beside the towering South Trilithon! |
