|Description ||In October, while visiting Oriel Ynys Mon at Llangefni on Anglesey I saw a display of ancient axes [replica shafts, I guess!], and one of these made me wonder if what I'd photographed at Stonehenge on private access at dawn on 06.12.06, might have been the outline of an axe, not a dagger.|
This sunlight-shape, projected onto Stone 57, looked like a dagger, dropping toward the Altar Stone as the sun rose. I hadn't noticed on the morning, or I'd have watched! (I was actually trying to photograph Burl's 'goddess image' - the rectangle carved on Stone 57.)
The sunlight entered the circle between Stones 53 and 54 [note dagger-like shape of aperture], and one of those stones is carved with a dagger and axes.
| Very good bit of detective work there Angie, that could well be an axe. |
I've wondered long and hard about the unusual cutout shape on that stone, think you may have found the answer!
| I sent examples of this theory (when I felt it was a dagger-shape) to Dr Burl who was initially quite excited, thinking I'd found a 'carved' dagger on Stone 57. My words must have confused him, though when I replied, pointing out it was a sun-shape, he didn't respond again. I've been sitting on it for a few years now, thinking it's just me, but am interested to hear any other opinions.|
Incidentally, it might be the appropriate time to see it, with the sun rising in the most convenient angle, on 6th Dec and again on 6th Jan? (Or maybe there were better times?)
| The square shape on Stone 57 is lit up some time after the Equinox sunrise17&18 March. Jack.|
