(2011-05-11) | The photos are from between 1905 and '08. Basically they were large Installation Ceremonies for new Initiates. (The beards are all fake, by the way)
In the 1730's William Stukeley had presumed that the Druids had built Stonehenge in 200 BC and that fable has been passed down virtually intact since that time. In 1899 the New Order received permission from the then owner to hold a Ritual, and this 'Tradition' has been maintained ever since, in various incarnations.
Very colorful and 'Mystic' to see them all out there at the Solstices these days, but incredibly anachronistic - a bit like seeing Victorians at the Roman Colosseum. |
