| Posted Comments: bat400 (2007-02-15) | The figure at the top is known as the "Staff God" and he appears in Andian art from before the Tiwanaku culture and then up through the years of the Inca Empire. In some versions, he holds clubs or staffs. In others one or more of the staffs become a stalk of corn (maize.) This gateway appearantly had a solar alignment for the solstice. Unfortunately the two halves were moved from elsewhere and reconstructed at this site. So the modern (mostly "New Age") pilgrims who show up to see the phenomena are generally shocked that the sun doesn't rise, framed by the doorway. |
