Description
Map dated after 1748 since it shows the Piercebridge to Durham turnpike on the right side of (Old) Eldon, but before 1822 when Eldon Blue was drawn on a map. This is one of 2 maps which show pencil marks indicating site of farm, the other map is dated 1792 shows the whole Estate and was probably drawn for the sale of the Estate using the probably earlier map (shown).
Coloured boundaries are tenant farm boundaries.
A short isolated stretch of the original road is shown on the LH (West) edge of the Great Hall Field.

Not sure what I am expecting to see here - where is the prehistoric fort?

The map shows no knowledge of the fort, but does have the location of the Great Hall field, which may be the location Anglo Saxon Great Hall. If this represents the centre of the Anglo Saxon fort and by inference the the earlier Forts then the outer fortifications would be virtually from a horizontal line just below Eldon (below the crumbling line) to almost the top and sides.

The inner fortified line runs along the North and West Sides of the Lime Kiln field and the Great Hall field. The stretch of isolated road being along the west boundary, and maybe the Right Angle end is the southern inner perimeter.
