Maiden Bower Mesolithic to Iron age BEDFORDSHIRE @ SP997224, near Sewell . Nearest town Dunstable Early iron age plateau "fort". Single rampart and ditch (now filled) surrounding 4.5 hectare central area. Funnel shaped entrance at the SE, which excavation showed was bridged. Banking extension to entrance evident on ESE Possible narrower second NW entrance may be more modern. The iron age structure overlies a Neolithic causewayed enclosure. Remains of split animal & human bones were found in a row of pits which were subsequently destroyed by quarrying which was carried out right up to one side of the structure. Flattish Neolithic ditches are visible cut by the V shaped Iron age ditches at the quarry edge. Examination of the central area revealed evidence of "battle" mid iron age, using slingstones. Geophysical evidence shows an earlier smaller ditched enclosure within the "fort". Mesolithic occupation is evident in this chalk hill area & continues to nearby Tottenhoe Knoll area. Considerable damage has occurred recently by motorcycles and stolen cars being driven into the site. Fortunately a local Parish Patrol working with the Police are dealing with such vandalism, (as evident at my last visit when one such " hooligan" was arrested. )
