Description A self-portrait in the futhest recess of the Halliggye fogou, Cornwall. Those are prescription sunglasses, not ideal for underground exploration, but I'd left my normal specs in the car. A lesson learned.

Why weren't Barnstaple Girls' Grammar teachers like this in the 60s? (Looks wet down there, Jim!)

It was bright and sunny topside, cool and dank in the fogou: see my report on the main Halligye page for more. The reason I look like I'm hanging on to the walls is because its very difficult balance when you're squatting down in pitch blackness. I only had one set of batteries, so it was either the torch or the camera. I guess a lot of our sense of balance must come from visual cues, and in the complete darkness of this chamber it was a bit odd. Not spooky, but quiet.

Good down there. Did you see the spiders? My kids loved it - we took a camp light down with us, and all had a great time. Just shuddering remembering the spiders!

Yes, I saw many many spiders and their little cotton-wool like nests. I took a picture of one of the arachnids but it didn't come out too well.

If there were white sacs dangling on threads, then they're cave spiders (Meta menardi)
