The Viking ship grave from NE. The hillfort rampart could be seen in background behind the burial.
Text from two information boards:
VIKING SHIP BURIAL
The stones mark the position of a ship in which beneath a low cairn of stones, the richly-adorned body of a Viking settler was buried. Sacrificed and buried with him were a woman, his horse and other livestock. This pagan burial of the late 9th century directly overlay Christian burials in stone-lined graves of the same period. Excavated in 1945.
BALLADOOLE: CHAPEL HILL
Rampart of Celtic Iron Age hill fort encircling the hill-top, broken by an entrance near this point. Probably dates from the first few centuries A. D. Partially excavated in 1945. |
